Pinguicula ( Lentibulariaceae )

Pinguicula ( Lentibulariaceae )
Pinguicula, which means" little greasy one." in Latin, common name is butterwort or to most Carnivorous Plants growers use "Pings."
Plants are found between the Northern Hemisphere & Arctic Circle which includes place like the UK,
Europe, Northern America with some now being found in places like Cuba & South America over the last decade or so.
Like most Insectivorous plants they grow in a rosette form with the leafs/traps growing from the centre outwards.
The leafs/traps come in form of a shape of a tongue with the side normally slightly turned up,
but there are a few plants that do look different to this rule.

The leafs/traps are made up with 1,000 of tiny hairs over surface, almost clear colour with glands on the top like on a sundew
but a lot smaller in size.
On the surface of the leaf/trap under and between the hairs are the glands which are used to digest the prey when the plant feels it has got it's food and juices come from the glands to do this work.
Pings, most growers feel that the plants attract it prey by the shine of it's tiny hairs and some feel that a smell may also help this.
The prey of these great plants are on the small size like gnats & fruit fly, but bigger bugs have been seen on the odd plant.
The glue like liquid on the hairs is very good in holding it's prey to the trap surface.
These plants have some great flower colours with likes of pinks, blues, whites & yellows.( more below on this )

The plants are put into zones in which they grow and how they grow.
You may like to look at the plant list below with it's keys to give more detailed groupings.

Cold temperate group:

These are great plants to start to grow these plants here in the UK, if you have not got a heated greenhouse.
Plants form a hibernacula which are cone shape, in the Winter, most Insectivorous plants grower call them as a resting buds.
At this time the bud loose their most of it's roots, so this is a great time to move them, if needed.
Around the base of these resting buds are many smaller and thinner normally made up with about two very tiny leafs ( resting buds ).
These are know as gemmae or brood bodies, which help us growers get many more plant when take away and planted.
Also this helps by being so small, handy to post to people that need the plant.
Plants like P.vulgaris ( studied by the great Charles Darwin ), P. grandiflora, P. longifloria, P. alpina,
P. macroceras & P.villosaare some of plants in this group.

Warm temperate group:

These plants grow in cool places, but do not have long term cold and ice. This means the plants do not form a resting bud like the above type. But saying this the plant does almost stop growing over winter or most only grow as an perennials which mean you will need to grow them by seed. Most of these plants grow in south eastern parts of the USA. P. lutea, P. primuliflora, P. planiflolia, P. ionantha & P.lusitanicaare just some of plants in this group.

Tropical group:

This group has some of the great diversity in shapes and flower colour and size of all the family of pings. Area of include central America and Caribbean, growers also call this group "Mexican types" here in the UK. The plants like a more open sandy soils and some just grow in mosses on trees. In some cases the some of these plants will take dryer time, which the plant makes a change in leaf type by growing leafs that are not carnivorous. At these times the plants normally send up they flowers which are great colours and look more like succulents. In the UK these plants are great to cross between each other, to make some great looking hybrids with flowers colours like reds, oranges and other great colours. Some plants in this group are P. moranesis ( this plant has many different varieties ), P. potosiensis, P. agnata, P. esseriana & P.gypsicola and main other.

Cultivation:

As there are wide area and type of places in which these plants grows, they take different types of soil mixes and take different amount of water at different times of the year. Some like a more peaty mix, while others like more mix with sand & perlite. With pots or other containers I would use sand to put around the Mexican type and with some others I put moss. The plants can be grown in small pots of around 7 cms in size and can be shallow as roots are short in all types. Water for Cold temperate group & Warm temperate group can be grown with the tray system which is wet all the time with cool water. In the Tropical group, these need to have dry times with soil just about damp, some need dry soil at times. Like I said on this site and others sites, you are best to find about where the plant comes from in the world and read some of the great books for more detailed information on growing some of these Carnivorous Plants, you may like to join some societies to get data from other members.
