These plants do not have to many pest or diseases but they are
about. Greenfly can be a
trouble with young growth around spring time with some plants.
But there are sprays that you can use, but I found that the
likes of sundews will use there stickiness drew for a time.
Other people use other chemicals to kill the insects. But I have
found that if you use your fingers to get most of them off and
then put the plant under water for a day or two. please check
the plant each day as some plants may not take that long a time
under water. But it should kill the greenfly with no air for
them. Looking daily at
your plants will help by getting any greenfly before they make
any babies. Botrytis is a
grey mould ( fungi ) that starts on dead growth and this why all
over this site I have put that you must cut dead growth as you
see it. This can spread to live growth if you do not keep your
plants clean. Good ventilation helps to keep this mould from
getting onto your plants. remember to stop watering from
Halloween ( 31st Oct ) to Valentines ( 14th Feb) in your
greenhouse, windowsill trays, cool /cold frames as the plants
will be resting and growth will be stopped or very slow so they
do not need all the water and humidity just keep the soil
damp and this will stop this mould at this time coming. but this
can come any time so please check your plants as this can spread
to others
Scale Insects are a flat brown
and look up close to a woodlice but smaller and you will not see
any legs. these can best get read of by looking at your plants
and rubbing them of the leafs and this will stop the damage that
comes with them , which can be mould or other fungi.
You can use meths to dap them off or use a
chemical spray if you wish.
Mealy bug is another Insect that can do some
damage to your plants. This look little white fluff
bug. same as scale insect you can use a spray to kill them.
Most of these can be dealt with by looking at
your plants and keeping them clean.
Also buy, swap and get you plants from people
that you know or growing that make there living from
selling these plants as they would loose out if they past
on plants with bugs on them.
I also always re-pot any plants I get to make
sure that the bugs are not in the soil and this is a good time
check the plant fully.
